Schloss Ambras Innsbruck

Maximilian I.

zu Lob und ewiger Gedachtnus

April 11 to October 31, 2019

Emperor Maximilian I, the ‘Last of the Knights’, died 500 years ago, at the dawn of the modern age. Throughout his life he strove to emphasise his own personal provenance and the fame of the House of Austria. He skilfully exploited the opportunities afforded by the new media of his day to fashion his gedachtnus, i.e. his memory and legacy. He made Innsbruck the imperial residence, a fact to which a number of monuments unique worldwide still attest to this day.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Emperor Maximilian I, Ambras Castle Innsbruck invites visitors to embark on an extended itinerary through the entire museum. The tour showcases the impact of Maximilian’s presence at the Castle and features superb heirlooms subsequently incorporated into the famous collections of his great-grandson, Archduke Ferdinand II (1529–1595), at Ambras Castle. Precious original works of art by the best and most renowned artists of their day vividly demonstrate Maximilian’s notion of memory and legacy, one which Ferdinand was to adopt from his great-grandfather and pursue with purpose.
